Quarterly Tammany Together Membership Meeting - Thursday, February 17th
Dr. Ed Chervenak, a Political Science faculty member at the University of New Orleans, will be the guest speaker at the Tammany Together quarterly membership meeting on Thursday, Feb. 17. Join us to be better informed so that you can express your opinion to those who represent you.
Tammany Together's next General Membership Meeting, open to the public, will be held at 6:30 PM in the Garden Room of the Christwood Retirement Community, 100 Christwood Boulevard, off of Highway 21 just south of I-12 in Covington. A map showing the location of the meeting is available at www.TammanyTogether.org/files/Christwood.jpg.
Every 10 years, after Census numbers are released, State politicians redraw boundaries for Congressional, State House and Senate, State Appeals and Supreme Court, and various other districts. Parish politicians redraw Council and other local district boundaries. What they do can have a major impact on who represents each of us, yet many citizens are oblivious to the process.
The Senate and House Governmental Affairs Committees have been meeting regularly to prepare for redistricting. They are not only redrawing district boundaries but, because Louisiana will now have six Congressional House districts instead of our current seven, they will have to make major changes to the shape of the Districts. The Parish Council will be hurrying to redraw Council District boundaries because of the fast approaching deadline for electing council members for the next four-year term.
Dr. Chervenak will be discussing the challenges of redistricting in the Greater New Orleans Area and state-wide. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at UNO and specializes in American Politics, Minority Politics, Political Participation, and the Voting Rights Act. Dr. Chervenak has published many articles, presented scholarly papers, taught classes related to American Government and Elections, and conducted research polls.
Please join us on February 17th for an interesting and informative evening that will educate you on how redistricting works and what it means to you.
