Help us improve highway safety in St.Tammany Parish!

Highway safety is a concern of everyone in St. Tammany Parish. Here's how you can help us do something about it.

In response to an issue brought to our attention at public meetings and through our web site, www.TammanyTogether.org, we have been working for the past several months with the Louisiana Department of Transportation (LDOT), the Louisiana State Police, and the St. Tammany Sheriff's Office to address illegal and hazardous parking by 18-wheelers on Interstate entrance and exit ramps and the shoulders of the Interstates and other highways in the parish.

In response to our requests, LDOT has installed "No Parking" signs on the entrance and exit ramps of the I-12/Highway 434 intersection in the Lacombe area, and the State Police have agreed to enforce these "No Parking" restrictions when violations are reported. This is a "trial run" to determine whether the posting of these signs reduces the illegal parking of "big rigs" in these areas. If this proves to be successful, LDOT has indicated their willingness to install "No Parking" signs at additional Interstate exits.

Also, the Sheriff's Office has told us that they will take action whenever anyone notifies them of potentially dangerous parking of 18-wheelers or other vehicles on parish roadways that they patrol, whether the area is posted with "No Parking" signs or not.

This is where you - our members and friends - come into the picture.

If you spot an 18-wheeler (or any other vehicle) parked in a posted "No Parking" area, or any other area where the parking poses a potential hazard, please call 911 immediately and report it. If the parking is on Interstate highway entry or exit ramps or shoulders, or along a state highway, you can also report it directly to the State Police by dialing *LSP ("star LSP") on your cell phone and asking to be connected to Troop L.

It is important that we report these violations whenever we see them, to encourage the posting of additional "No Parking" signs and to improve the safety of our highways.

Thank you for your continued support of Tammany Together.
